Little Caesars Arena in Detroit was the site for the opening night of the Ice Cube’s Big 3 three basketball league. The league is starting to really gain momentum, and Season 3 is touted to be the best so far. Several big-name former NBA players will be joining the league this year. Gilbert Arenas, Jason Terry, Lamar Odom, Josh Smith, Will Bynum, Anthony Morrow, and Mario Chalmers just to name a few.
Another legendary Hall of Fame female player will be joining the coaching ranks of the Big 3. Lisa Leslie joins Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman the coach of the defending champion Power as the only female coaches in male professional basketball. The Big 3 has been at the forefront of empowering women through various positions in the league. Four New teams join the league this season, and the league was able to sign a broadcasting contract with CBS.
In game one 3 Headed Monster dominated the paint in route to a 51-46 win over Trilogy. Reggie Evans was a monster in the paint with a double-double consisting of 22 points 23 rebounds. Rashard Lewis added 18 points and 11 rebounds. In the post-game media session, Hall Fame player Coach Gary Payton thought his team played poorly but was satisfied with their effort.
In game two featured the defending champion Power versus 3’s Company. Power put on a clinic as their chemistry and impressive shot making was on full display. Cuttino Mobley led a complete team effort with 28 points. Coach Lieberman and several players made it a point to stress how important each players contribution on the team really means. The whole team was present for the press conference including last years league MVP Corey Maggette who was out tonight with an injury.
The final game of the evening featured two of the league's new teams. Bivouac faced off against the Enemies and Bivouac was able to survive by a 50-43. In his Big 3 debut, Will Bynum was able to score 22 points including the game-winning the 50th point. Anthony Morrow added 16 points. I was able to speak with Bynum before the game and he stated he was ready for tonight and had been waiting for his opportunity to play in the play and compete in the Big 3. Josh Smith and Royce White would be ejected from the game for a scuffle that broke out between the two players in the first half.
The crowd for opening night in Detroit was impressive, and the crowd in Indianapolis the next day was the same. This is just the beginning of what should be an exciting season this year in the Big 3.
